Appointed Person Training: Course Aims

Provided to candidates from across Berkshire and Hampshire, including Portsmouth, Wokingham and Southampton, this CPCS A61 Appointed Person training course is designed for all operatives who are in charge for the planning and execution of lifting operations. The aim and purpose is to create and develop the knowledge of the candidates on the responsibilities of an appointed person, whilst also instructing them on how to safely plan a lifting operation whilst keeping in compliance with the legislation, as well as the health and safety of employees and those around them. 

In order for the delegate to competently and safely carry out the role, they would need to pass the theory and practical tests. Upon successful completion of the CPCS appointed person training course, the delegates will have a great amount of knowledge and information to safely plan lifting operations for mobile cranes on site; therefore expanding their horizons in the construction industry.

  • Codes of practice ‐ BS7121 part 1 and BS712 part 3
  • Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved with lifting operations
  • Crane appreciation ‐ crane types, capabilities and limitations

  • Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
  • Crane stability/ground conditions
  • Rated Capacity Indicators (RCI’s) and Safe Working Loads (SWL)
  • Selection of lifting accessories
  • Types of accessories and use
  • Mode factors for accessories
  • Down rating of accessories
  • Sling angles
  • Communications
  • Planning a lifting operation
  • Writing a risk assessment (End test)
  • Writing a method statement (End test)

Test 

In order to obtain the necessary Red CPCS Trained Operator Card candidates must pass both the CSCS touch screen H+S test for Managerial & Professional (within the last 2 years) and the CPCS Theory Test in addition to the Practical Test.
